Arrested after causing a scene at a saloon near Main and Copper streets, Conway resisted being taken to jail, reportedly clinging to a lamp post as officers used clubs to subdue him.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nSuffering head trauma, Conway was treated at the emergency hospital and released on bond, but he returned days later with severe symptoms and died from a concussion a week after the incident.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe coroner’s jury attributed Conway’s death to police beatings, prompting murder charges against the two officers. Despite this, a jury acquitted them in May 1917 after deliberating for just 35 minutes.
