Over the years, nearly 50 unique schools offered elementary education in Butte and outlying communities. Most of Butte's public and parochial primary schools taught students through grade 8 until 1957, when the first Junior High (East) was opened to help ease overcrowding in the grade schools and high school. The second Junior High (West) opened in early 1969, and the majority of the parochial institutions were dissolved due to a ban on public funding for church schools in the same year.\r\nAlthough many of Butte’s schools no longer exist, the Butte community continues to proudly support both public and parochial schools, and to appreciate the fine buildings that have been repurposed since ending school operations. </p>","postscript_text":"","tour_img":"https://storyofbutte.org/files/fullsize/76b29e4b34b977641863a549c0c7135f.jpg","items":[{"id":3538,"title":"Emerson School","latitude":45.99437377726884079720548470504581928253173828125,"longitude":-112.5156919956862111575901508331298828125,"thumbnail":"https://storyofbutte.org/files/square_thumbnails/76b29e4b34b977641863a549c0c7135f.jpg","fullsize":"https://storyofbutte.org/files/fullsize/76b29e4b34b977641863a549c0c7135f.jpg","subtitle":null,"address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":3539,"title":"Hillcrest Elementary School","latitude":45.98311019090414220045204274356365203857421875,"longitude":-112.4852306842149118892848491668701171875,"thumbnail":"https://storyofbutte.org/files/square_thumbnails/d78bfb7a29d26d64073f70883b8796ee.jpg","fullsize":"https://storyofbutte.org/files/fullsize/d78bfb7a29d26d64073f70883b8796ee.jpg","subtitle":null,"address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":3540,"title":"John F.
