This photo shows the Speculator Mine with smoke pouring out of it. In 1917, a fire began in the Granite Mountain Mine and then quickly spread to the nearby Speculator Mine. Before many of the men could escape, they were killed. 168 died. It was the worst hard-rock mining accident in U.S. history.
