ACM Pay Office, 18 E. Quartz

The Anaconda Company contracted with Hugh Johnson to build this addition to the Chambers Block Pay Office in 1918. With so many miners on the payroll, the company found that the Pay Office in the Chambers Block was not large enough to distribute payroll effectively. The new building, which opened at the end of 1918, had a large room that could accommodate fourteen clerks handing out envelopes with miners’ pay. In July 1919, during a period of labor unrest in Butte, someone set off a charge of dynamite at the main door to the new Pay Office in an attempt to destroy it. | Source: Fred Quivik, July 2025
