Monroe Grade School (Butte Head Start)

The Butte Head Start Program, a federal program for preschool children from low-income families, is in the former Monroe School. The first building, originally called the South Butte School, was a three-story brick building on 1st Street dating to 1890. The name changed to the Monroe in 1896 and the building was enlarged in 1902. The Monroe School was rebuilt in 1958 at 1000 South Arizona Street and it closed in 1978.
