Established in 1912, Holy Cross Cemetery was created after St. Patrick’s Cemetery sold its last burial lots. A 59-acre site was purchased along what is now Harrison Avenue, near the Four and Five Mile Houses.

In 1982, an expansion of Butte’s airport runway required the relocation of 300 graves from the cemetery’s Pauper’s section. A group of young men from Butte undertook the careful task of moving and reburying the remains.

Today, Holy Cross continues to serve as a burial site for Catholics unable to afford burial elsewhere, while Mount Moriah serves as the resting place for non-Catholics.
