Typical 19th-century stamp mill.

The stamp mill on display at the Old Lexington Gardens represents the standard configuration of stamps, mortar box, camshaft, and aprons used throughout the American West at gold and silver mines. It was often called the California stamp mill because the particular details of the configuration developed there in the wake of the California Gold Rush. | Source: Henry Louis, A Handbook of Gold Milling (New York: The MacMillan Company, 1902), 238.
