Note the hoses connected to the drill. The larger hose conveys compressed air to the drill, and the smaller hose conveys water, fed into the drill stem to reduce dust during drilling. Mechanized drills, powered by compressed air, were widely used in the Butte mining district in the nineteenth century, so every large mine had its own compressor house.
