South of Front Street, Kaw Avenue crosses the BNSF track just west of the switchyard and, on the south edge, the small locomotive terminal. The switchyard has materials from recent decades: rails, switches, ties, and ballast. The property and its railroad functions, however, go back to 1881 and the first train to reach Butte. This railway property has been owned and operated by a sequence of companies. As it has for over 140 years, this railroad presence defines the base of Butte Hill, separating it from the Flat. | Source: Butte-Silver Bow Public ArchivesDownload Original File
