Established in the 1880s as Butte’s Catholic cemetery, St. Patrick’s grew in an organized yet complex layout, making it one of the city’s more challenging cemeteries to navigate.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a large angel statue marking the grave of John O’Farrell, nephew of Marcus Daly, and nearby is the Hennessy mausoleum, the resting place of businessman D.J. Hennessy. The cemetery also features plots for priests and nuns, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Robert Emmett Literary Association.
By 1912, all burial plots in St. Patrick’s had been sold, leading to the establishment of a second Catholic cemetery, Holy Cross. Today, the cemetery faces significant challenges, but efforts by the local Ancient Order of Hibernians have been instrumental in restoration, including paving roadways, improving irrigation, and repairing headstones.
